An example of someone racist in the book is Tom Buchanan, who is completely against black people. On page 12- 13 of The Great Gatsby, he exclaims,"Civilization is going too pieces... Have you read 'The Rise Of the Colored Empires' by this man Goddard? ...The idea is if we don't look out the white race will be- will be utterly submerged. It's all scientific stuff; it's been proved." You can see that Tom is ignorantly and blindly believing something, only because he hold racist sentiments towards colored people, and he's using the book in order to back up his stance with 'evidence.' He continues to say "It's up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things... -And we've produced all the things that go to civilization-oh, science and art, and all that. Do you see?" Thus proving his mediocre way of thinking, making statements with inaccurate information. He so dumbly truly believes this, and is just using it as a way t be racist and mean.
