Rich People And Backward Thinking

An example of someone racist in the book is Tom Buchanan, who is completely against black people. On page 12- 13 of The Great Gatsby, he exclaims,"Civilization is going too pieces... Have you read 'The Rise Of the Colored Empires' by this man Goddard? ...The idea is if we don't look out the white race will be- will be utterly submerged. It's all scientific stuff; it's been proved." You can see that Tom is ignorantly and blindly believing something, only because he hold racist sentiments towards colored people, and he's using the book in order to back up his stance with 'evidence.' He continues to say "It's up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things... -And we've produced all the things that go to civilization-oh, science and art, and all that. Do you see?" Thus proving his mediocre way of thinking, making statements with inaccurate information. He so dumbly truly believes...

Great Gatsby Notes 2

Nick Carraway makes his way over to the Buchanan's mansion and met his charming second cousin, once removed, Daisy. He also caught up with Tom Buchanan and met Jordan Baker, who he found scary, but beautiful. He sees how Tom has a woman in New York and how racist he is, and sees Daisy is charming but she is sad, she almost seems empty and all that's left is the outer shell she fools people with.

Gatsby Notes 1

We read about how Nick Carraway moved for a fresh start in bonding and how he feels about people; Gatsby being the only decent person he's met. Nick talks about how he hardly knows the Tom Buchanans and just talks about how they're friends. The beginning of the book uses a lot of foreshadowing for what's to come later in the book.
https://www.brainpickings.org/2012/01/12/john-steinbeck-on-love-1958/ One main thing I learned is that love can effect you in two ways. One can either drag you down, or bring you up. One is toxic and selfish and one helps you flourish, and feel amazing. Love can be both beautiful and ugly, but most of the time love is sincere. Love shouldn't be taken lightly because it is something really deep and meaningful. John Steinback believes this, and so do I. I became interested in the link because i'm a hopeless romantic, I just love love, so seeing something with the word love in it automatically pulled me in. It caught my attention, because it is something I find beautiful and hearing about love makes me happy and gives me a warm, comfortable feeling.
I think the difference between hearing and listening is that, hearing, you're just hearing the person speak, but not putting too much thought into it, meanwhile listening is hearing what is being said, and taking it in and putting thought into what is being said.

Rhetorical Analysis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltun92DfnPY In the video, Shane uses pathos in order to appeal to the viewer's emotions. He wants to bring awareness to everyone about how not only adults, but cruel kids can also really be and the impact made from this cruel manner. He wants to inform viewers about his past experience with bullying and how it can take a toll on a person's life and how it shouldn't be treated like a joke. It's a serious matter, that Shane wants the audience to pay attention to and learn from. I believe it would bring the same impact on the audience and myself, if I were to listen to the speaker in person. I think it would have me feeling the same emotions because of the voice he projects when talking about this matter.

Notes From Today's Lecture

Some observations I made from today's video of Martin Luther King's speech is that he seemed very confident and composed when giving out his speech. I also noticed he used pathos in order to appeal to the audience's emotions about the topic and problem at hand. His speech was about everyone, not just focusing on African Americans, but also the affects of the problem, which affects everyone. He talks about the problems black people have to face and how instead of just being so negative to each other, we should just try to solve the problem, not with violence, but with words and compromise. I think that's very inspirational because instead of fighting violence with violence, he told people we can use words to express our emotions and talk it out or at least peacefully protest. I personally think he's such a brave person for that, because if I was in his position, i'd want to take action, but instead he was the better person and tried to resolve the matter.

I, Socrates

From the last two days of observing the class, I learned that Socrates would rather die than give up learning. It was inspirational the way he would not let others restrict him, so instead ended things all together in order to prove a point. This taught me that I should not submit to others and their beliefs and hold onto my own. This helped me think more about not conforming to the ideas of others; that I should always be myself no matter what. This Socratic seminar informed me well about Socrates as a person and his believes, that have informed people and got them thinking all throughout history.

Music As Literature

I think music should be considered literature because it uses a form of language and words to express the emotion felt, just like poetry has a way with words when describing something and also has a sort of flow, I believe music is the same and should be viewed the same way; being a form of literature. I think what differentiates a poem, from a novel or a rap from an opera is the way it is presented. An example being a rap can be talking about the same problem or situation as an, but the matter in which each is presented differs very much. One spilling out the words and using different wording or slang, while the other is singing out different lyrics. They're all a form of writing, just each presented in different matters.
