Fahrenheit 451 essay
In the book “Fahrenheit 451,” written by Ray Bradbury, it let’s us follow the life of Montag and how he comes into terms with himself and the type of society he is living in. The book later introduces us to Clarisse, a lively young teenager full of questions, whom later changes Montag’s view of life. He continues to observe and learn new things, with Clarisse’s help and later comes to realize that the world they live in is so cold and numb and immune to actual feeling and emotions. Technology plays a big role in the book’s society, it is used everywhere & depicted as cold, hard metal, such as the fireman’s metal dog. The technology is advanced, making people not actually communicate with each other, but instead relying on the technology for everything. The government in the book also plays a huge role as well, killing off anyone who even thinks for themselves, or talks with meaning. I mean fireman burn houses with books in them & later kill the people who owned the books, like that’s not normal. Fireman are suppose to be the ones saving houses, not the ones burning them. The people don’t even talk to each other, and when they do, it’s small talk. This shows us how flipped their society is and how the people are so numb and have given up their individuality have just conformed to the strict rules given. It’s sad to see they’ve just been living the most dull lives, and have accepted the numbness inside their souls.
One of many symbols used in the book is the mechanical hound. It represents the lack of organic life, with actual feeling and emotions, a beating heart. It can also represent the people of their society, cold, numb, and gets rid of anything that doesn’t follow the rules given. Another symbol seen throughout the book, is Montag’s hands. At first they are burning houses down & then later snatching up a book from a burning house. This shows us he is a dynamic character, who slowly changes throughout the book. And finally, the last symbol I noticed, was fire. In the beginning of the book, it is seen as something bad, you’re burning houses down with fire, but near the end Montag finally realizes it’s warmth. His ways of thinking, finally changed the way he viewed lot of things, as well as fire. The book uses a lot of symbols, but these were the ones that stood out to me the most, since they had really deep meanings and contribute to the theme of the book.
I feel as if Bradbury’s prediction of technology was really precise, since it applies to the society we’re living in now. We are often bombarded with advertisements and commercials everywhere, apps, stores, highways, tv’s and newspaper, as if anyone actually reads anymore. Technology is everywhere and heavily relied on in society now these days, as Bradbury predicted. We are consumed by technology and even I myself admit I rely on technology way too much. It’s made a negative impact on people, making organic communication hard. It doesn’t even let us think for ourselves actually, since we rely on our sources to feed us information, which we use for school, jobs, etc.
In conclusion, Bradbury’s main point that he was trying to get at with this book, is we are so consumed by technology, that we don’t even think for ourselves and that we shouldn’t let people control us, or take anything away from us. They can’t take away the knowledge we have. He wants us to be aware of the harm technology is doing and aware us of the authorities who try to control us, because if we’re not careful, our society could go down a wrong path.
